Homemade Doritos Seasoning

Junk food.

It’s awful.  I know it.

But sometimes  I will get a certain craving.

One of those very irritable cravings…

Junk food.

Junk food on my mind all day and all night.

Artificial cheese-flavored junk food.

I head for the junk food aisle and grab a bag of those artificially flavored chips.  However, as I reach the checkout counter I panic and toss it out of my basket like it’s got an infectious disease or something.

I just can’t anymore.  I’ve got artificial flavors guilt.

But  I may have found a solution to my junk food craving.  I discovered a recipe online for Doritos seasoning mix using a mixture of nutritional yeast and a few other spices.

This seasoning mix may not taste exactly the same as Doritos but it comes quite close. I’ve been sprinkling it on just about everything.  So far I’ve sprinkled it on kale chips, baked french fries, broccoli,  cauliflower, and popcorn.  It lends a spicy cheese-y flavor without all the guilt of artificial flavors.  Plus, it’s made with nutritional yeast which as the name implies is very — nutritional!

Oh yes, I definitely have junk food cravings, I’m sad to admit. Doritos is merely one of them. I eat Doritos for breakfast sometimes. No kidding. Sometimes its the only thing the body wants. Great idea for a recipe!

Who needs actual Doritos when you have this!? GREAT idea to satisfy those junk food cravings sans junk food!

  • Christina @ Sweet Pea's Kitchen says:

This here might be a game changer folks! You mean to tell me I can make my own Doritos seasoning? What is it about junk food that always has us craving it anyway? I need to give this one a try. Now you have me craving Doritos! ;)

  • Christin@SpicySouthernKitchen says:

Love this homemade Doritos seasoning! I must try it. I try to refrain from buying Doritos, but I give in about twice a year. Usually when I’m traveling somewhere and I make a convenience store stop. Although the last time I stopped in a convenience store I bought Chocolate Peanut Butter Bugles and boy were they good!

  • Liz says:

Oh, wow! This is a great recipe!!! I wan to try it on my next batch of popcorn!!!

  • Claire @ The Black Cat Kitchen says:

MMM bet this is amazing on popcorn! Don’t think I’ve ever seen yeast flakes, but I’m thinking maybe health food stores would stock them? Will be on the look out for them to give this a go!

    • Ruby says:

Yes, that might be a good place to find it. I hope you find it. I buy it at the grocery store where they have a bulk foods section and I buy just the amount I want. It’s so inexpensive that way. But I’ve also found it at Super Target, in the aisle where the sugar and flour are at. Just remember it’s not baking yeast. :)

    This sounds amazing.

I’m actually living in Paris for the next few months and while I haven’t had any cravings for American junk food (I mean come on, this is Paris, it’s like a food lovers heaven) I do love the idea of being able to make these myself.

    Thanks for the inspiration.
